Wahlhelfer sind wahlberechtigte Bürgerinnen und Bürger, die am Wahltag in den Wahlvorständen als Wahlvorsteherin oder Wahlvorsteher und Beisitzerinnen und Beisitzer die Wahlhandlung leiten und das vorläufige Wahlergebnis im Wahlbezirk feststellen.
Die Tätigkeit in einem Wahlvorstand, zu dem die Gemeinde- oder Stadtverwaltung beruft, ist ein Ehrenamt. Zur Übernahme ist jede Bürgerin und jeder Bürger verpflichtet, es kann nur aus wichtigen Gründen abgelehnt werden.
